Michael Darby on Beast Games

Working on the Beast Games was both challenging and a lot of fun! The Eagle Eye and Shotover G1 were late additions to the show. By the time I was invited to tour the locations, 90% of the episode one set was built. That made placing pick points much more difficult as the only access was from the ceiling catwalks. The rigging team was up to the task and rappelled down to position both the truss and the hardware. The set "trap doors" were quite high, so our flying height was greatly restricted, but we still aimed to create the largest flying area we could.

Nearing the end of our test/prerig day, we were notified Jimmy was to be on set and looking to work on a cold open. Before you knew it, Kyle Perry, camera op and I were full on with the Beast team, working out what ended up being the opening shot of the Beast Games, with Jimmy up on the $5,000,000 pile of money introducing the show!

City Set V Rig

In episode 2, we set up a large V rig between two 120' boom lifts, 400+' apart. This allowed us to get above the 80' towers and beyond the stairs on either side of the set. The set design created depth and a three-dimensional look to our shots. To connect between the winches on either side of the huge city set, we hopped onto the tac line in sheds that were housing all the comms and electronics.

Episode 9 had us back at the city. After a long night, we derigged as the sun was coming up and rerigged the stage for the finale. A couple of hours' sleep at a hotel, and we were back at it. We were able to maneuver ourselves into positions during the final episode for some epic moments.

We were very proud of the work we did on four episodes of the Beast Games. The entire crew was great to work with from the Beast team, production and camera crews. We would welcome the opportunity to do it all again should Mr Beast return to Toronto for season 2!
